Online Music Classes

The Music Department offers a wide variety of courses as fully online courses, or hybrid courses that blend face to face and online learning.

List of Online Courses

Most of these courses fulfill General Education Requirements for the college, and are accepted by CSU and UC schools for transfer. These courses are designed for both students who have an interest in various aspects of music and want to take a course for fun, and students who already have a background in music and may be considering professional performance and/or working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Music.

history and culture of rock music

MUS 115 – History & Appreciation of Western Music
history of music through the centuries

MUS 116 – Musics of Multicultural Americas
history and culture of various American music

MUS 119 – History of Jazz
history and culture of jazz music

More advanced music theory and ear training courses include the following courses, which are only available as hybrid courses:

MUS 101 – Music Theory I

MUS 102 – Music Theory II (co-requisite with MUS 104)

MUS 201 – Advanced Music Theory (co-requisite with MUS 203)

MUS 103 – Musicianship I

MUS 104 – Musicianship II (co-requisite with MUS 102)

MUS 203 – Advanced Musicianship (co-requisite with MUS 201)

If you feel you already have a firm understanding of music fundamentals (primarily major and minor scales, key signatures, intervals, triads, and rhythm), you can take our challenge exam to test out of MUS 100 and directly into MUS 101 (Music Theory I).
