Frequency Vocal Jazz

May2014Q Happy 2013

The vocal jazz program at MiraCosta College offers beginning and experienced jazz singers the opportunity to study and perform the best of contemporary and classic vocal jazz.  Under the direction of Matt Falker, the program is built from a combination of two ensembles:

Frequency is a vocal jazz ensemble of experienced singers that focuses on learning ensemble repertoire and developing live performance skills. Frequency keeps an active performing and touring schedule during the fall and spring terms.  Auditions for Frequency take place only at the beginning of the fall semester. Expected commitment is one full school year.

Spectrum is a group of singers under the direction of Dr. Arlie Langager that meets at the same time as Frequency and performs on all campus vocal jazz concerts, and gives special focus to studying solo jazz repertoire. All singers in the Frequency Vocal Jazz program also have the opportunity to develop solo skills (including microphone technique, writing charts, working with a band).  Auditions for Spectrum take place at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters. Expected commitment is a minimum of one semester.

In addition, student instrumentalists of all kinds (primarily piano, guitar, bass, and drums) are welcome to audition for the ensemble. Student sound engineers are also welcome to interview for the program to get experience in working with analog and digital consoles and wired and wireless microphones. Together as a class, the Frequency Vocal Jazz Program hosts the vocal side of the Oceanside Jazz Festival, a festival held that brings well-known guest artists, clinicians, and visiting choirs and bands to MiraCosta each spring.

Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays

2:00pm-3:50pm (instrumental) or 2:30pm-4:20pm (vocal)
