True North & Frequency Vocal Jazz

Come hear Frequency in a special send-off concert before they travel to San Jose for their featured performance at the California State Music Educator’s Conference! They will be joined by Los Angeles based professional vocal jazz group, True North (Katie Campbell, Sharmila Lash, Fletcher Sheridan, and Matt Falker).

MOJO in Concert

In January 2017 our two-time Downbeat Award winning band traveled to New Orleans for a special performance at the Jazz Education Network Conference. The performance, presented again here, featured the unpublished works of our guest artists including Benny Golson, Mike Stern, Brian Bromberg, Fred Wesley, Ernie Watts, and director Steve Torok.

Carmina Burana – Choirs and Orchestra

This epic symphonic work of medieval texts on the pleasures and perils of life includes the powerful “O Fortuna.” MiraCosta choirs along with invited choirs from Palomar College and the children’s choir from the North Coast Singers join the MiraCosta Symphony Orchestra for both performances. Directed by Branden Muresan.

Jazz Collective Presents the Music of Prince

In 2016, the world was shocked by the sudden death of pop music icon Prince. Professor Steve Torok continues his ongoing lecture/performance series with a discussion of Prince’s music and the many connections to jazz and blues. The MiraCosta College Jazz Collective presents “original” interpretations of his biggest hits.

Vertical Voices

Vertical Voices is one of the premier vocal groups in the United States, featuring four powerhouse vocalists who also run major vocal jazz programs around the United States. The group ventures into new artistic territory within the vocal jazz genre, utilizing wordless vocals and more. Appearing with Frequency Vocal Jazz. Directed by Matt Falker.

Vocalist Sara Gazarek and pianist Josh Nelson

When the piano is paired with the human voice, the possibilities are limitless and the outcome is unpredictable. Vocalist Sara Gazarek and pianist Josh Nelson have aligned their musical spirits in a way that would make any artistic duo envious. Appearing with Frequency Vocal Jazz. Directed by Matt Falker.

 Songs of the Slave

One of the most significant contributions to American music are songs from the African American tradition. This concert by the MiraCosta College choirs features selections from Composer Kirke Mechem’s opera, “John Brown” and spirituals arranged by Moses Hogan and Jester Hairston. Guest conductor Eliza Rubinstein.

Oceanside Jazz Festival Concert (instrumental)

Lenny Castro

In his prolific career Lenny Castro has performed and recorded with hundreds of jazz and pop stars including Adele, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, The Crusaders, Quincy Jones, Wayne Shorter, and many others. The concert features Lenny with our bands performing high energy Latin and funk. Free Q&A in the afternoon.

 Applied Classical Recital and MiraCosta Chamber Choir

The first half of this special event showcases solo student artists from the Applied Classical Music program; the second will feature a performance by the MiraCosta College Chamber Choir.  Concert proceeds go toward student scholarships. Directed by Arlie Langager.

The Annual MiraCosta Business of Music Showcase 

The annual Business of Music Showcase is promoted by the students in the MiraCosta College Music Business II class.  The concert features regional artists from a variety of genres.  Admission is free.

 Songs from Opera and Oratorio

The first half of this afternoon performance will showcase solo selections from the Advanced Vocal Techniques class. The second half will include duets, trios and small ensembles performing semi-staged selections from opera and oratorio.

Frequency Solo Night with Instrumental Jazz Majors

The final performances of the school year by the Frequency Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Instrumental Jazz students will feature selected soloists and small groups performing contemporary and classic jazz repertoire, primarily arranged by the students in the ensemble. Directed by Matt Falker.

A Salute to Russia

The symphonic suite Scheherazade by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov is a vivid, colorful masterwork based on The Arabian Nights, also known as One Thousand and One Nights. Also featured are the winners of the San Diego Branch of Music Teachers Association of California Competition who will perform solos with orchestra.
